2009 PRCA Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee

On Thursday, July 23rd, the Public Relations Council of Alabama's East Alabama chapter hosted the Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee at the Saugahatchee Country Club. This is the sixth year the PRCA has held the Bee benefiting the Lee County Literacy Coalition.

Sixteen teams from the Opelika and Auburn area competed for the title of Best Spellers. Each team consisted of two people spelling as many words as they could in three minutes. Words were chosen from several lists of commonly misspelled words in the English language. We had a great turnout, several teams wore costumes (the ACHMI "brides" were very impressive), and Destiny Brown sang a song she and LCLC tutor Bubba Hall wrote for the Literacy Coalition.

The winning team this year was "The Spellcasters" of the Auburn Magazine. The team was sponsored by Precision Glass and team members were Betsy Robertson and Suzanne Johnson. Second place winners were Ashley Anders and Ami Landers of the Alabama Community Healthy Marriages Initiative (ACHMI) and the third place team was Marsha Sanson and Jerry Kelly of The City of Opelika. Judy Jones and Janet Epperson, a LCLC tutor, tied for first place in the audience spelling bee and Judy won in a spell-off.

Grant Received From the Junior League of Lee County

On August 4, 2009, LCLC received a grant of $500 from the Jr. League of Lee County through their "Literacy and the Arts" program to purchase books for the 5th and 6th grade students who attend the Auburn Daycare Centers after-school programs. Lydia Brawner, an LCLC volunteer, will select age appropriate books to be placed in the classrooms at the Centers. We hope to have the books in the Centers by September. Last year LCLC received a Junior League grant to place books in the 4-year-old classroom at the Greater Peace Child Development Center in Opelika. The Literacy Coalition and Junior League work together to support and encourage reading by children in our community.

Pi Day Celebrated at LCLC

The Coalition joined in the nationwide celebration of Pi Day which honors the mathematical constant pi, p, with pineapple juice and slices of apple, pecan, and lemon meringue pie on March 13, 2009. Though Pi Day is normally celebrated on March 14 (3/14) we offered pie and coffee to our tutors a day early. Many of our tutors dropped in the office throughout the day to visit and share some pie.

2009 Lee County Literacy Coalition Tutor/Learner Appreciation Dinner

The Lee County Literacy Coalition held its annual Tutor/Learner Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, February 24th at the EAMC Health Resource Center. The Coalition holds this dinner each year to celebrate their learners' successes and show appreciation for the dedicated work of the volunteer tutors.

Estella Perryman was named the 2008 Learner of the Year. Her tutor, Mary Millman, was pleased to praise Mrs. Perryman's efforts. The pair have worked together for the past two years.

The dinner was well attended with over 60 tutors, learners, and friends of literacy. Dawn Smith, coordinator of the Adult Education program at the Southern Union State Community College, spoke on the partnership between the Literacy Coalition and adult education program at Southern Union. Laray Kelly, a Coalition tutor, talked about the importance of being an avid reader. Community partners such as the Public Relations Council of Alabama who hold the annual PRCA Corporate Spelling Bee to raise funds for Literacy Coalition programs, and the Wal-Mart Corporation were thanked by Dr. Bill Walsh, a Coalition board member and long-time tutor. Carolyn Moore, another board member and tutor, spoke to the audience about her work with the Wednesday Math Class held each week for adults in need of math tutoring.
