In 1989, First Lady Barbara Bush ignited a national movement for literacy, inspiring communities across the country to take action. In Lee County, that spark lit a fire among local leaders determined to make a difference. Thomas Brawner, then Director of the East Central Alabama Adult Education Program, was one of the visionaries who helped launch the “Lee County Reading Program.” With the support of Dr. Thomas Worden, Director of the Auburn University Reading Service Center, the program evolved into what is now the Lee County Literacy Coalition (LCLC).

Judith Peterson, Director of United Way of Lee County at the time, recognized the urgent need for adult literacy services and championed the creation of a dedicated agency. Thanks to her advocacy and the collaboration of passionate educators and community leaders, LCLC was officially incorporated as a nonprofit on February 3, 1994.

Imagine for a moment what it would feel like not to be able to read. Not just books or newspapers—but job applications, medicine labels, bus schedules, or your child’s report card. For many, this isn’t a hypothetical. It’s daily life.

In Alabama, 1 in 5 adults is functionally illiterate. In Lee County alone, more than 30,000 adults struggle with basic reading and writing skills. These individuals are not strangers—they’re our neighbors, coworkers, fellow church members, and friends.

Across the United States, the numbers are staggering. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the U.S. Department of Education, 48 million adults lack essential work skills like literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving. Many live in poverty, lack a high school diploma, and face enormous barriers to employment, healthcare, and civic participation.

Literacy isn’t just about reading—it’s about dignity, opportunity, and the ability to thrive. That’s why we’re here.
