Lee County LITERACY COALTION (LCLC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing adult literacy programs at no cost to the community. LCLC receives 11% of its funding from the United Way of Lee County, with additional funding sources from individual and corporate donations, grants, and foundations. Our mission is to help adults learn to read, write, and use mathematics and computers at a level necessary to succeed and thrive.
Key community benefits include increasing and leveraging resources to meet the current demand for adult literacy services; improving collaboration and coordination across local systems serving adult learners while promoting equitable access to literacy education for all adults in Lee County and neighboring counties.

Imagine for a moment what it would be like not being able to read. For some, this is a reality. One in 5 Alabamians is functionally illiterate with more than 24,000 men and women in Lee County alone. They are our neighbors, our friends, and maybe even someone that you work or go to church with. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the U.S. Department of Education, 43 million adults in the United States lack basic work skills like literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving. Many exist in poverty, lack a high school diploma, and struggle to find and keep a living wage.

The Lee County LITERACY COALITION’s 2022-25 Vision enhances traditional programming and extends its reach by leveraging technology. Literacy workshops are offered via webinars with online tutoring options. An aggressive campaign to recruit and train volunteer tutors is underway to include strategic outreach to targeted demographics.
Here’s where you help focus our vision. As a donor or sponsor, your support will assist with tutor training, instructional material for learners, literacy workshops, and programming and outreach activities. As a volunteer, your service is critical to our success. Illiteracy is a serious societal issue and a source of shame and stigma for those struggling. On any given day, we are always improving.
